Lighting is often left until late in a project, then reduced to a grid of ceiling downlights. Yet it has an enormous effect on how a room feels. The same furniture and finishes can look flat under one scheme and rich under another. Thinking about it early is one of the most useful things you can do for an interior.
Think in layers
A single source rarely does everything a room needs. Most rooms benefit from a combination of three layers:
- Ambient light provides general illumination, often from coves, ceiling fittings or wall lights.
- Task light is focused where you need to see clearly, such as a kitchen worktop, desk or bedside.
- Accent light adds emphasis to a wall texture, artwork or plant, and gives a room depth.
Choose the right colour temperature
Colour temperature, measured in kelvin, describes how warm or cool light appears. Around 2700K to 3000K gives a warm glow that suits bedrooms and living rooms in the evening. Slightly cooler light, around 3500K to 4000K, can suit kitchens and work areas where clarity matters. Mixing very different temperatures in a single view usually looks accidental, so it helps to agree on a choice and then keep to it.
It is also worth looking at colour rendering (CRI). A higher CRI shows the colours of food, skin and finishes more naturally.

Light the surfaces, not just the floor
The brightness we perceive in a room comes largely from lit walls and ceilings. A room with bright downlights and dark walls can feel gloomy even when it measures well. Washing a wall with light, or lighting the ceiling from a cove, can make the same room feel larger and more comfortable, often with less glare.
Plan before the ceiling goes up
Wiring is one of the first things to be fixed on site, and one of the hardest things to change later. That is why a lighting plan belongs with the furniture layout. Decide where the sofa, bed and dining table will go, then place lights and switches around them. Dimmers and separate circuits add flexibility, letting one room shift from bright and practical to soft and quiet.
